General
- Is this SaaS or a desktop application?
- It is a SAAS application and does not require any desktop installs
- If SaaS does it run in a browser?
- If it runs in a browser, what browser is it compatible with?
- Firefox, Chrome and Safari are the preferred browsers for this application
- Do I need an always-on internet connection to use the application?
- Yes, an Internet connection is necessary for accessing redacter
- What file formats are supported?
- Text redaction is supported for PDF, DOC/DOCX, PPT/PPTX, XLS/XLSX and TXT files. Image redaction works with PNG, JPG and TIF files.
- Is there an automatic scheduler for batch file processing?
- X-Out has a facility for a “back-end” redaction services and batch processing is possible by integrating with the back end redaction service.
- What languages does it support? (Or does it even care about languages?)
- Text redaction is supported only for English
Image Redaction
- If I define a rule for an image (a check for example), and I put in different size check images does the box I defined to block out account number scale up and down or do I have to define a block for all of the different check sizes.
- The image template will scale to fit the destination object being redacted. However, if a large number of such objects exist, it is safer to define a template for them separately.
- Does X-Out store the redacted image or does it get redacted every time?
- Image redaction is performed dynamically. The default configuration does not store redacted images. The user only sees the redacted document.
- Do I have to redact a document every time I want to view it or share it with someone?
- The redacted document is loaded to the user’s desktop and can be saved or printed so it is not necessary to run it through X-Out each time it is referenced.
- Can I define my own image templates?
- Yes. The process is very simple and straightforward.
Security
- If the words are X’d out can someone still read what is underneath them?
- No. The redacted text is completely removed
- Can this be configured to run with a firewall?
- Can this be configured to run with a proxy?
- Does it work over HTTPS?
- Yes, that is the default and recommended configuration for document access
- Can the files be un-redacted by the software?
- No. Redaction is a one way operation
- Are the files stored in an encrypted format?
- Yes. All files loaded into the system are encrypted using AES 128 or AES 256 (configurable)
- How does X-Out protect against man-in-the-middle attacks and other options that could intercept the information before its redacted?
- Man in the middle attack does not apply in this scenario since all communication takes place over https and only redacted documents leave the site
- What security does X-Out provide to prohibit unauthorized access to documents?
- Role based access control is used to limit access to documents as well as info within the docs
- What security does X-Out provide to prohibit unauthorized access by users?
- Password protection is enforced through a strong password policy
Source Documents
- How do I incorporate documents from Google Drive, Drop Box,etc?
- The system provides a seamless interface to link to third party online storage services.
- Does the system copy the files stored on these third party services?
- No, the files are retrieved on demand when someone requests a document for redaction. Redacter does not duplicate the storage
- Can I selectively choose the folders I wish to include for redaction from the third party services?
- Yes, a person can choose one or all of the folders once the link has been established.
Text Redaction
- Can I add patterns to be recognized out of Word, Excel, PDF & Text documents? Such things as Court Docket Numbers, Part numbers (that are all the same format), names of pharmaceuticals, names of medical procedures, etc.?
- Yes, all of this can made possible by defining pattern recognition rules for the said objects
- Can I add patterns myself or does someone have to do that for me?
- Text pattern recognition can be complex and requires work at the backend. It has to be performed by Redacter team
- How do I apply the same rules to a particular document type kept in a number of different libraries?
- Since documents in different collections are considered to be independent documents you need to associate rule(s) with the person that will see the documents. This can be done by assigning a set of rules to a specific role (that could apply to a number of people) and have the role applied to the document collections. That allows for rule management in a single place In that way you could redact particular data types for all of the documents across multiple sources easily.
- Can I have different users that see different parts on different documents? How?
- Yes, a document can be subjected to multiple redactions to make them available to people with different security levels. This is enabled by defining multiple user roles and assigning a different set of redaction rules to each role
